"Hole in the heart" usually refers to an ASD (between the upper chambers) or a VSD (between the lower chambers). Both are common and, importantly, many close on their own.
How they are treated
Small defects are simply monitored. When closure is needed, many can be sealed with a device delivered through a catheter — no chest incision, home the next day. Larger defects are repaired surgically with excellent results.
The goal is always to protect the lungs and prevent long-term strain on the heart, at the right time in the child's growth.
