PDA Device Closure

Closing a Patent Ductus Arteriosus — a blood vessel that should shut after birth — using a catheter-delivered device.

The ductus arteriosus is a normal fetal blood vessel that should close within days of birth. When it stays open (patent), extra blood floods the lungs and overworks the heart, causing breathlessness, feeding difficulty and poor weight gain.

In most children the PDA can be closed without surgery: a tiny device is guided through a catheter and placed to seal the vessel. There is no chest incision and recovery is quick. Larger or premature-baby PDAs are managed individually with medication or surgery when needed.
